What is CliQ, and what does the word mean?

CliQ is the name of Jordan’s instant payment system. JoPACC (Jordan Payments and Clearing Company) launched it on 10 June 2020. JoPACC owns and runs it, and the Central Bank of Jordan supervises it.

The idea is simple: you send money from your bank’s app to a person or a business in Jordan, and it arrives instantly, between bank accounts, and between bank accounts and mobile wallets.

Question Answer
Who owns and runs it? JoPACC
Who supervises it? The Central Bank of Jordan
When does it work? 24/7
What currency, and where? Jordanian dinars only, inside Jordan only
Limit per transfer JD 10,000; each bank may set a lower limit or a daily limit
Fees Banks currently offer it free, and they may set fees

Does CliQ have its own app?

You don’t need a separate app. CliQ sits inside your bank’s app, and JoPACC says it is available in 19 mobile banking apps in Jordan. You will find it in the app’s main menu or under transfers.

Some banks ask you to register through their online banking instead of the app. If you can’t find it, ask your bank.

How do I turn on CliQ and set up an alias?

Your alias is what people use to send you money, instead of a long account number. These are the steps as JoPACC explains them:

  1. Log in to your bank’s app.
  2. Find CliQ in the main menu or under transfers.
  3. Register your alias: a nickname, your mobile number, or a name of letters and numbers. If it is already taken, the app asks you to choose another.
  4. The app may ask which account you are turning CliQ on for.
  5. You get a notice that it worked, and you can send money straight away.

You can register more than one alias for the same account, and use one alias for several accounts, with one default account for receiving. JoPACC notes that these features depend on your bank.

How do I send money by CliQ, and is a phone number enough?

Yes, a phone number is enough if its owner has registered it on CliQ. You can also send to an alias, an email or an IBAN:

  1. Open your bank’s app and choose CliQ.
  2. Enter the alias, mobile number, email or IBAN.
  3. Enter the amount.
  4. The app shows the details, including the recipient’s full name. Read it carefully.
  5. Enter your passcode: a set passcode, or a one-time code sent to your phone.
  6. You get a notice that the transfer worked.

JoPACC says you can also send to someone who has not registered on CliQ, as long as their account is at a participating bank.

What does CliQ cost?

JoPACC says banks currently offer CliQ free of charge, and that they may set fees as they see fit. So there is no single number for every bank. If you send many transfers, ask your bank what it charges today.

What is the CliQ transfer limit?

The limit is JD 10,000 per transfer. Each bank may set a lower limit or a daily limit, so yours may be lower. You can find your limit in your bank’s app or through its customer service.

Which banks work with CliQ?

According to JoPACC: all banks in Jordan except Al Rafidain Bank. CliQ also connects bank accounts with mobile wallets, through the JoMoPay mobile payment system. It is available for both personal and business accounts.

What else does CliQ do besides transfers?

JoPACC lists four services. What you get can differ from bank to bank:

Service What it means
Single transfer You send an amount to a person or a business
Request to pay You ask someone to pay you
Return payment You send back an amount you received
QR payment You pay a shop by scanning a code

What if a transfer doesn’t arrive, or goes to the wrong person?

It didn’t arrive: contact your bank. JoPACC says your bank is responsible for tracking the transfer and making sure it is either delivered or returned to your account.

It went to the wrong person: you can’t pull it back yourself. The sender is responsible for the transfer, and the recipient and the bank do not have to return it. Contact your bank at once so it can try to recover it amicably through the recipient’s bank.

That is why the most important step is the one before you confirm: reading the recipient’s name.

How do I protect myself from CliQ fraud?

  • Read the full name before you confirm. It should be the person or business you are dealing with.
  • If you are receiving money, don’t rely on a screenshot. Open your account and check that the money really arrived.
  • Don’t give anyone your code. Your passcode is yours alone.
  • Don’t approve a payment request you don’t recognise. Read the name and the amount first.
